Omsco, the UK’s largest organic dairy co-operative, has scooped an impressive five awards for its range of Organic Kingdom Cheddars in this year’s South West Cheese Awards.
The cheese, produced in partnership with Wyke Farms, won three golds in the Mild, Mature and Extra Mature Organic Cheddar sections of the competition; took silver position in the Organic Hard Cheese class and was awarded bronze in the cheese for export in final branded packaging category.
Michael Pollak, brand manager, says this is a fantastic achievement for the Organic Kingdom brand, which we sell in the US. “We’ve worked hard to perfect our products over the past few years, and it’s superb to win awards in five categories.”
He explains that Omsco has been exporting organic dairy products to the US since 2013, when the business took the bold step to produce milk meeting USDA organic equivalent standards, without the use of antibiotics.
“We started this venture with just a few farms. However, in light of export sales growing steadily over the years, our specialist milk production has expanded rapidly since then,” says Michael
“And, as a result, we produce the only significant USDA-compliant dairy pool in Europe and are the UK’s largest exporter of organic dairy. This allows us to provide a stable and sustainable return to members,” he adds.
“These awards will really help promote our traditional range to American consumers. And, the timing is good, given a major new listing in the USA with Sprouts Supermarkets, a natural food store chain with over 300 stores.”

Omsco was formed in 1994 by a group of dairy farmers with a shared belief that there was a ‘better way to farm’. Now twenty-five years old Omsco has transformed its member, product and customer base.
It is now the largest UK organic dairy cooperative and the second largest dedicated organic milk pool in the world. It is the longest established organic dairy cooperative in the UK, with an annual turnover of £90m and remains the only national 100% organic farmer-owned and farmer-run British dairy cooperative in the UK with over 250 members.
Omsco supplies the majority of the UK’s organic dairy processing needs and is the leading dairy exporter of organic cheese, butter, raw milk, whey and specialist ingredients.
To spread risk Omsco created a diverse and geographical spread of markets, and as part of this strategy they were the first European dairy company under the EU-US Equivalency Agreement, to produce and sell USDA-certified organic dairy products in the US.
Effective trading partnerships are a cornerstone of Omsco’s growth strategy and in 2013 Omsco partnered with US organic giant Organic Valley, the world’s largest dedicated organic milk pool and $1bn brand at retail, to drive its US export business. In 2015 Omsco and Organic Valley agreed a mutual financial stake in each other’s cooperatives, cementing a long-term alliance.
In 2017 Omsco announced a second global strategic supply alliance with Europe’s third largest dedicated milk pool, Eko Holland.
A new partnership with Somerset based cheddar maker Wyke Farms was also announced in 2017, operating under a joint business identity, The British Organic Dairy Company, the collaboration combines organic dairy excellence from Omsco, with award winning standards from the most sustainable cheese maker in the world.
