Omsco has been recognised again for its world-leading products after receiving six awards for its USDA-certified Organic Kingdom Cheddar range at the 2019 Global Cheese Awards.

The UK’s largest farmer-owned and farmer-run organic dairy co-operative, which supplies over 70% of the UK’s organic Cheddar, was awarded with three ‘gold’ results in the categories of “UK organic cheese”, “finest mature Cheddar” and “cheese for export in commercial packaging”.

Running for over 155 years, the Global Cheese Awards provide producers and retailers with a platform to showcase their latest and best offerings. With fierce competition in every category, the event engages world-class judges to select the winner from thousands of entries from across the globe.

“This is a fantastic achievement for both the company and our 250 farmer members across the UK,” says Michael Pollak, brand manager at Omsco.

“These awards pay tribute to the high-quality  milk produced by our farmer members and the skills of our cheesemaking partner Wycke Farms.   They also help us to secure access to the premium overseas markets for our dairy products and ingredients which are critical to  Omsco delivering  a stable and sustainable return to members,” he adds.

Originally formed in 1994 by five like-minded dairy farmers, Omsco has since grown to become the UK’s leading exporter of organic cheese and the only large-scale European producer of USDA-certified organic milk and dairy products.

Along with the gold results, Omsco was also named “best in category” for their organic cheese, was crowned “UK reserve champion” and was presented with a ‘bronze’ result for its extra mature UK cheddar.

Notes to editors

Omsco was formed in 1994 by five  dairy farmers with a shared belief that there was a ‘better way to farm’.  Their collaboration created the UK’s first national pool of organic milk.  Now twenty-five years old, Omsco has 250 members nationwide, produces over 50% of the UK’s organic milk and has a global market for its dairy products and ingredients.

It is the largest UK organic dairy cooperative and the second largest dedicated organic milk pool in the world. With an annual turnover reaching £100m it remains the only national 100% organic farmer-owned and farmer-run British dairy cooperative in the UK.

Omsco supplies the majority of the UK’s organic dairy processing needs, including 75% of organic Cheddar sales, and is Britain’s leading exporter of organic cheese, butter, raw milk, whey and specialist ingredients.

To spread risk Omsco created a diverse and geographical spread of markets, and as part of this strategy they were the first European dairy company under the EU-US Equivalency Agreement to produce and sell USDA-certified organic dairy products in the US.

Effective trading partnerships are a cornerstone of Omsco’s growth strategy and in 2013 Omsco partnered with US organic giant Organic Valley, the world’s largest dedicated organic milk pool and $1bn brand at retail, to drive its domestic and export business. In 2015 Omsco and Organic Valley agreed a mutual financial stake in each other’s cooperatives, cementing a long-term alliance.

Omsco also works in partnership to supply Yeo Valley with milk for its organic yoghurt and cream; and with Somerset-based cheesemaker Wyke Farms, to produce its award-winning range of Organic Kingdom Cheddars.
