Only 278 farmers applied to go organic last year – down from 1142 in 1999, according to government figures. The Soil Association's Peter Melchett responded that the situation was "not glum" – pointing out that "One thousand farmers are leaving agriculture every week, so the fact that around 40 farmers a month are interested in converting to organic methods is encouraging."
