Having made my protest regarding this proposal earlier in the year, I received this letter yesterday:

I am writing to you in response to your representation to the Secretary of State on the application made by Syngenta Seeds Ltd to release genetically modified wheat. This letter is to inform you of progress on this application.

This application was considered by the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) at its meeting of the 23 January 2003 and in subsequent email correspondence. In their consideration ACRE took into account any scientific issues raised in representations relating to harm to human health or the environment. In conclusion ACRE advised that the release proposed by Syngenta poses a very low risk to human health and the environment. Taking into account ACRE’s advice, consent was granted to Syngenta Seeds Ltd on 17 March 2003.

A copy of ACRE’s advice is included with this letter. The representations made on this application will be placed on the public register within 28 days of the granting of consent, unless they are marked as confidential. The public register is held at Defra, Ashdown House, 123 Victoria Street, London, SW1E 6DE. Further information regarding this consent will shortly be available at http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/gm/index.htm or alternatively by contacting the GM policy and regulation unit at the address above.
