A letter has been sent to each member of the Food Standards Agency board by an alliance of concerned organisations, including the Soil Association, Greenpeace and the National Federation of Women's Institutes. The letter accuses the FSA and its chair, Sir John Krebs, of pro-GM bias and of organising a 'breakaway' GM debate in competition with the independent one initiated by the government.
A report on Radio 4's Today programme included an interview with Peter Melchett in which he said, "The FSA is not seen as neutral in this debate – it's seen as partial on the pro-GM side – indeed leading the pro-GM campaign to get these crops and this food accepted in this country, after consumers rejected it."
