In an item on Radio 4's Breakfast News this morning, a sugar beet processor said that there was no market for GM sugar beet. This was in response to the report that GM technology could reduce the cost of sugar beet production by 15%. It was pointed out that reductions in production costs had already been made in recent years by better crop management without having to resort to GM. A spokesman for the 'Five Year Freeze' campaign said that organic sugar beet production had doubled in the last two years.
