Prisons are attempting to reduce violence amongst inmates by taking junk food off their menus. Instead they will test theories that vitamin supplements and healthy eating have a positive effect on behaviour. The project, to be lead by Bernhard Gesch, a physiologist at Oxford University, will see participants being prevented from eating large amounts of fatty, high carb foods and sugary sweets. Instead they will eat more fruit and vegetables and take extra nutrients in capsule form. Gesch said, "Since the 1950s there has been a tenfold increase in the number of offences committed. How else can we explain that but by diet? It is not down to genetics. The main change over that period has been nutrients."
