An organic farm which employs and accommodates workers who would otherwise be homeless has been awarded thousands of pounds.
Gilead Foundations, a social enterprise in Risdon Farm, near Jacobstowe, Okehampton, won £90,000 in the Spark competition. The farm provides training and employment for 25 men, women and children.
An award ceremony was held in London yesterday.
The centre will use its winnings to train people who have been homeless to produce and sell organic milk locally and organic soft cheese around the country.
Lois Samuel is the marketing manager for Gilead Foundations. She said: "The project has been really inspiring and really made us step back and look at our social enterprise in a new light. It's made us think how we can expand to a bigger level and make a greater difference to more homeless people and those with addictive problems."
The competition, run by the Government's Communities and Local Government Department, challenged organisations to come up with new training schemes for the homeless.
