Figures released yesterday by the RSPB and Joint Nature Conservation Committee showed signs that woodland species are staging a recovery after a thirty-five year slump in the number of farmland birds. Whilst populations of farmland birds are about 60% lower than in 1970, they appear to have stabilised and have risen 6% since 2002. Ian Pearson, the Environment Minister, said there was still cause for concern for certain species. Environmental farming initiatives are believed to be the main factor behind the improvements.
