Today's Daily Mail includes a second instalment of ‘the damaging impact of intensive farming’. An extract from Graham Harvey’s book We Want Real Food looks at how fertilisers have destroyed our soil.
“Over the past four decades the rate of demineralisation has been cranked up by the rise of chemical farming. Today the soil depth, once almost six feet, is just five inches. […] Traditional farming will put up the cost of food. But industrial agriculture imposes hidden costs: the cost of healthcare to combat nutrition-related disease, or the cost of cleaning up drinking water supplies. It has been estimated that if we all ate organic foods, these hidden costs, which we pay for in our taxes, would fall by more than £1 billion annually”.
