Parents could be banned from filling their children's lunchboxes with junk food and fizzy drinks under guidelines issued to school governors.
Canteens should remove all unhealthy choices from the menu while pupils could be kept in school at lunchtime to prevent trips to the chip shop. The guidelines drawn up by the National Governors' Council and Food Standards Agency encourage a whole school approach to healthy eating.
Jean McEntire, chief executive of the National Governors' Council stressed the importance of getting parents on side: "We are saying that governors would need to consult parents and give guidance at the same time about where they might get healthy menus for lunch boxes."
