Senior civil servants from Defra were condemned yesterday in 'The Role of Defra', a report by MPs of the environment, food and rural affairs committee. Stating that the committee holds little confidence in Defra's ability to undertake its principal responsibilities – promoting rural areas and monitoring sustainable development across Whitehall – the report further accuses Defra of losing sight of the fact that agriculture is central to rural communities, the rural economy, countryside issues and the environment.
