Red Tractor Misleading

Tony Blair is backing a £250,000 campaign encouraging consumers to seek out food bearing the Little Red Tractor logo.

The tractor logo features on 5,000 food and drink products worth about £4.5bn a year. Food on which it appears is produced to agreed standards of good agricultural practice.

But animal rights campaigners maintain that the logo guarantees little in the area of animal welfare. Joyce D'Silva, chief executive of Compassion in World Farming, said the scheme seemed to be deliberately misleading the public.

"The only advice we can give to consumers is to ignore the Little Red Tractor logo completely and insist on free-range or organic produce."
