Supermarkets have promised to shun GM ingredients as laws come into force requiring labelling to identify where they are used. Many stores and manufacturers intend to continue a ban that they had already imposed on themselves. The legal regime, which comes into effect on Sunday, requires food firms to label the use of the derivatives of GM crops such as the oils, starch and lecithin used in processed foods. The labelling will apply if more than 0.9 per cent of one ingredient comes from GM sources.
Those who say they will continue to ban GM include Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose, Asda, Safeway/ Morrisons, Iceland, Budgens, Somerfield/ Kwik Save, Unilever, Nestle, Associated British Foods and Cadbury Schweppes.
