Students at Leeds Grammar School and Bradford Girls Grammar School have been able to buy COR!, a flavoured organic semi-skimmed milk drink, since February and its popularity has surprised caterers at both schools.

Mark Bateman, head chef at the Leeds school, said that the new milk drink was kept with other healthy products in a separate cabinet to canned drinks so that the 1,200 boys had a clear choice.

"COR! is dearer but the boys obviously like it and the demand is growing. I am amazed how popular it has become in such a short time. Hopefully it indicates that the message about healthy eating and drinking from a young age is getting through."

Helen Holmes, catering manager at the Bradford school, said: "COR! has gone down extremely well and it looks set to become even more popular as the weather gets warmer. Lots of girls prefer it to fizzy drinks."

COR! - which is 98 per cent fat-free and provides 48 per cent of a persons recommended daily allowance of calcium - is being supplied to the schools by Gary Rawson, who farms the 370 acre Thornhill Hall Farm, Dewsbury. Milk from his British Friesian and Jersey herd is marketed through the Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative (OMSCO) which, in turn, supplies the producers of the new flavoured milk product, Classic Organic Limited, based on the Welsh borders near Oswestry.
