Welsh rural development minister Michael German has announced a new set of initiatives to help small and medium-sized food producers and processors to win local public sector business, such as schools' and hospitals' contracts. They follow on from the initiatives already announced by the Minister for Finance, Local Government and Communities Edwina Hart, to set up pilot projects to investigate ways of strengthening local Welsh food supply to the public sector. Mr German said, "Everybody would want us to investigate ways to get locally procured, fresh quality food to school dinner tables and hospital beds. A number of pilots are being established within the next few months to test how to maximise - within legal constraints - procurement from small and medium enterprises in the food sector. Fresh and organic food will be looked at in particular."
