A new £1bn supermarket price war could shatter the fragile recovery of the British farming industry, the government's farming czar, Sir Don Curry, has warned.
Sir Don told the Guardian that he was 'deeply concerned' that prices being cut on the high street 'without serious thought being given to the impact of the food chain'. He said there was no more slack for farmers to take up.
Organic farmers say another supermarket price war will have devestating consequences for them, too. Patrick Holden, the director of the Soil Association, warned that further cuts would drive many off the land.
Bruce Carlisle, a second generation organic farmer [and OMSCo member], said any further cuts woud push the market to the continent.
