Almost one in three apples sold in Asda, and one in 12 sold in Tesco, are now grown outside the EU, according to Friends of the Earth third annual report on supermarket attitudes to British fruit.
The survey also found that Tesco and Asda had fewer UK-grown apples on their shelves than when surveyed last year. The average proportion of UK-grown apples in the two supermarkets was 38%. Apples were also found to be cheaper in greengrocers and markets than in the supermarkets.
Between 1990 and 2000 the number of apple orchards in the UK halved.
