BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH ORGANIC MILK

11 November 2002

Drinking British organic milk could help beat the winter bugs as it's full of cold-beating Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). There is increasing evidence that CLAs boost our immune systems and research has shown that organic milk has higher CLA levels than non-organic milk.

A three-year research programme at Southampton and Reading Universities1 is investigating just how powerful the CLAs are and even hope that it could help to protect against cancer by improving the ability of the immune system to seek out and destroy tumours.

Organic milk has higher levels of CLAs2 because it comes from cows leading a more natural life and eating more grass, hay and preserved grasses (silage). Most non organic cows are fed with genetically modified concentrates, processed cattlefeed and less grass.

Five winter flu-busting foods:
1. Organic milk: packed full of CLAs
2. Orange juice: provides 100% of RDA of vitamin C
3. Apples: high in vitamin C
4. Shiitake mushrooms: contains lentinan which stimulates the immune system
5. Red cabbage: helps fight bacteria - researchers are investigating why!

Unlike ordinary milk, organic cows are fed on grass and hay that isn't treated with pesticides, they are not fed on GM cattlefeed and are only given antibiotics when ill, unlike non organic cows.
